Mobile data in Spain: mainland, islands and borders

Coverage is dense across the mainland: the cities, the coast, the motorway network and the high-speed rail corridors are all well served, and a long train day is exactly where having data earns its keep. Expect it to thin out in the emptier interior and in mountain country in the Pyrenees and the Picos de Europa, which matters more if you are walking than driving. The Canary and Balearic Islands count as Spain for a plan; Andorra and Gibraltar do not, and neither sits in the EU roaming zone either, so a trip crossing those borders needs its own arrangement.

FAQs for your travel eSIM

Do I need a travel eSIM for Spain if I already have an EU plan?

Probably not. Under roam-like-at-home rules an EU or EEA plan generally works in Spain on your normal domestic allowance, so there is nothing to buy. A travel eSIM is for arrivals from outside the EU, or for anyone whose own tariff excludes roaming or caps it tightly — worth checking yours before you decide.

Do I need a SIM card for Spain, or is an eSIM enough?

A Spain eSIM is enough for everything a traveller does with a phone: maps, messaging, transport tickets, ride-hailing and tethering a laptop on your eSIM data. Spanish law requires a prepaid line to be registered against an identity document, so a physical SIM card means a shop and a passport — and all it adds is a Spanish phone number.

Does a Spain eSIM cover the Canary Islands and the Balearics?

Yes. The Canaries and the Balearics are Spain as far as a plan is concerned, so the same eSIM works on them. What it does not cover is Andorra or Gibraltar: those are separate destinations with their own plans, and neither is in the EU roaming zone.

How do I get internet in Spain as a tourist?

Three routes. Roam on your own plan, which is free of extra charge if it is an EU or EEA one. Buy a Spanish prepaid SIM card, which needs ID registration in a shop. Or install a travel eSIM before you fly, which is the fastest of the three because it is working the moment you land.

Will my phone work with the Spain eSIM?

Any eSIM-compatible phone bought in the last few years (iPhone XS or newer, Pixel 3 or newer, recent Samsung Galaxy, etc.) works with our Spain travel eSIM. Use our compatibility checker if you are unsure.

When does the Spain eSIM start counting?

Validity starts the moment your travel eSIM connects to a network in Spain, not when you buy it. You can install it before your trip without losing days.

Do I keep my regular number while using the Spain eSIM?

Yes. Your physical SIM stays active for calls and SMS on your normal number. The Spain eSIM only handles mobile data, so WhatsApp, maps and apps all run on your eSIM data.

Can I tether or use a hotspot in Spain?

Yes, every Spain eSIM plan allows tethering and personal hotspot, so you can share your eSIM data with a laptop or another device.

What happens if I run out of eSIM data in Spain?

You can buy a new Spain eSIM plan at any time and install it on top of the previous one. No need to wait or visit a shop.

Is the Spain eSIM refundable?

If you have not installed or activated your travel eSIM yet, contact our support and we will issue a refund. Once the QR has been scanned and the eSIM activated, it cannot be refunded because you changed your mind — but if it isn't working, contact us and we'll sort it out.
