Every "no internet after landing" story tends to end the same way: a setting called data roaming, switched off, quietly blocking a plan that was working perfectly well. It's the single most common reason a freshly installed travel eSIM shows full signal bars and zero data — and the fix takes about ten seconds once you know where to look.

What data roaming actually means
"Roaming" just means your phone is connected to a network that isn't the one your SIM belongs to. Your home carrier has an agreement with that foreign network to let you on anyway, and — separately — your phone has a switch that decides whether it's allowed to use that arrangement for data. That switch is data roaming. Turn it off, and your phone will happily show bars from the local network but refuse to move a single byte of data over it.
Phones ship with data roaming off for regular home SIMs by default, for an obvious reason: it protects people who never asked for a foreign bill from getting one by accident. That's a sensible default for a SIM tied to a home contract. It's the wrong default for a plan you bought specifically to use abroad — and travel eSIMs run into it constantly, because the setting doesn't know the difference between "my home carrier is about to charge me by the megabyte" and "this line was built for exactly this network."
Why a data-only eSIM depends on it completely
A regular SIM has calls, texts and data, so if roaming is off you might still notice something works — texts often still arrive, calls might still connect depending on your carrier. A travel eSIM typically carries data only. There's no fallback service to hint that the line is alive; data roaming is the only path it has to a network at all. Off means the line is completely silent, with no other symptom to point you at the cause. That's what makes this one setting worth checking first, before assuming a QR code failed or a plan didn't activate.
Where to find it
The exact wording varies slightly by phone and OS version, but the setting lives in the same neighborhood everywhere:
iOS: Settings → Mobile Data (or Cellular) → tap your VamosData eSIM line → Data Roaming → toggle on.
Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → tap your VamosData eSIM line → toggle Data roaming on. (Samsung: Connections → SIM manager; the toggle itself is the same.)
Two details trip people up more than the toggle itself:
- You're toggling it for the eSIM line specifically, not for the phone in general. If your phone shows two lines, make sure you've tapped into the travel eSIM before flipping the switch — toggling your home line's roaming by mistake is how a "no roaming charges" trip gets one anyway.
- Mobile data has to be pointed at the eSIM line too. Roaming being on for a line that isn't set as your active data line still gets you nothing. On iOS this is the separate "Mobile Data" selector one screen up; on Android it's usually the same SIM settings screen as the roaming toggle.

Check compatibility with the device checker, pick a plan on destinations, and install it at home over Wi-Fi using the iOS or Android guide — installing doesn't use any of the data. Land, switch off airplane mode, flip data roaming on for the VamosData line, and the connection that was invisible a moment ago just works.
