Best eSIM for Thailand

Thailand is one of the easiest countries in the world to travel and a surprisingly easy one to arrive in badly connected. Suvarnabhumi at six in the morning: a Grab to book, a hotel address in Thai to show a driver, an arrival card confirmation someone may want to see, and a family group chat that has been awake for nine hours. All of it needs data before you have any.

So "best eSIM for Thailand" is really a question about arrival day, not about a logo. Here are the criteria we would judge any provider on — including the places where we are not the answer.

What "best" means on arrival day

It is already on the phone before you fly. A VamosData eSIM is installed at home over Wi-Fi, which is the only place the install is comfortable, and installing it does not start the clock — the plan begins when it first connects in Thailand.

It is sized to the trip you are actually taking. Two weeks of maps, messaging, Grab and uploading photos is not the same amount of data as a month of working off a laptop in Chiang Mai. If you have never counted, our day-by-day breakdown by traveller type is a better basis than guessing, and the Thailand eSIM page has a plan finder that asks four questions.

It can be extended without starting again. Trips stretch. A plan you can top up from your account is worth more than a cheaper one you have to replace.

Somebody answers. A VamosData eSIM comes with support and a site in five languages, which matters more at 2am in a hotel lobby than any feature list.

The counter queue you are not standing in

Buying a Thai SIM card is an in-person errand with your passport. Since August 2025, registration at a shop or authorised dealer has involved an identity check against your passport, reportedly including a facial scan at the counter; an amendment published in May 2026 also caps non-Thai customers at three lines per operator and keeps verification in person. These are the Thai regulator's rules to change, so check the current requirements before you plan around them — and none of this is legal advice.

A VamosData eSIM sidesteps the errand rather than the rules: it connects as a roaming visitor on a Thai network, which is why there is no counter, no queue and no registration step in the arrivals hall. We wrote more about the countries where a local SIM means showing your passport.

Where a local SIM still wins: a long stay, and anything that needs a Thai number — some delivery apps and local services want one. We made that case honestly here. Arriving on a VamosData eSIM and deciding later, with working data in your hand, beats deciding in the queue.

Where the signal gets thin

No eSIM invents a network that is not there, and Thailand has places where there isn't one: the middle of the Andaman Sea on a longtail boat, the back of a limestone karst, deep inside a national park, a sleeper train through the dark. Download your offline maps and screenshot your hotel address before you leave the city, whichever SIM is in the phone.

The other honest limit is hotel and cafe Wi-Fi: the moment you join it you are on a local connection again, with whatever that network does or does not allow, regardless of what is installed on your phone.

Thailand, then where?

Very few Thailand trips are only Thailand. Bangkok to Siem Reap, a border crossing into Laos, the sleeper to Penang, two weeks of Vietnam bolted on, a long layover in Singapore — the route is usually the point.

That is what regional plans are for. Instead of buying a separate single-country plan each time you cross a border, a VamosData regional Asia plan keeps one setup running across the route. The list of included countries is on the Asia eSIM page — read it against your actual itinerary first, because the only regional plan worth buying is one your route is genuinely inside. Our guide to choosing a regional plan walks through the arithmetic of one regional plan versus several country plans.

And if the trip after this one is somewhere else entirely, the same account and the same browser cover more than 140 countries and eight regional bundles, from Japan to Morocco — the full list is on destinations.

Three checks before you fly

Five minutes, at home, on Wi-Fi. Confirm your handset supports eSIM on the device checker — that is a property of your phone, not of any plan. Install from the confirmation email using the iOS or Android guide. And make sure data roaming is switched on for your travel line: a data-only profile does not work without it, and that single setting is the most common reason a perfectly good eSIM looks broken on arrival.

One more thing that is not a connectivity task but is easier with data: Thailand's digital arrival card is filled in online in the days before you land, and it is not the only one in Asia now.

Live Thailand plans are on the Thailand eSIM page. If you are still deciding where in the country to go, our Thailand travel guide covers which coast suits which month.

Szybkie odpowiedzi

Will my VamosData eSIM work the moment I land in Bangkok?

Yes, if you install it at home before you fly. Your VamosData eSIM connects as soon as you come out of airplane mode, so the arrival hall is for immigration rather than for shopping for data.

Do I need to register a VamosData eSIM with my passport in Thailand?

No. Thailand's registration rules cover Thai SIM cards sold at a counter; your VamosData eSIM connects as a roaming visitor instead, so there is nothing to sign up for on arrival. Rules are the Thai regulator's to change, and none of this is legal advice.

Does a VamosData eSIM give me a Thai phone number?

No — VamosData plans are data-only, like most travel eSIMs. Keep your usual SIM in the phone for calls and bank codes, and let your VamosData eSIM carry the internet.

Can one plan cover Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia on the same trip?

That is what a regional plan is for. Check which countries are included on the Asia page before you buy, and pick the regional plan only if your actual route is on that list.

What happens if I run out of data halfway through the trip?

Most plans can be topped up from your account, and you get an email at around 80% used with a link that shows what is left without logging in. Topping up beats buying a second eSIM.
